Thula Masa - Sri Kaveri Ashtottaram

Dear All,

Greetings and Namaste. Next week the holy month of Thula (Aippasi in Tamil) starts and Thula Kaveri Snanam is an important religious occasion in this month. I happy to share a very rare Ashtottaram on River Kaveri whose source is unknown. I hope this will benefit those who plan to take dip in Holy Kaveri during Thula and equally too to those who can offer mAnasIka prayer to the river who can't make it personally to the river during this month.

As usual, a few snippets in this regard:
- Agni Puranam apparently mentions that all holy waters of the universe converge in River Kaveri during Thula and therefore is very sacred to take bath in the river during this month.
- Ptiru Tarpanam in Holy River Kaveri is also considered sacred and propitiates Pitrus.
- The entire stretch of Kaveri (from Talakkaveri onwards) is filled with temples on either side of its banks - including to two Srirangams (Sri Ranga Patnam near Mysore and Sri Rangam near Trichy). The no. of temples on its banks may be in hundreds and corroborates the sacredness of the river.
- River Kaveri is said to be the wife of Sage Agastya (LopamudrA's river form) - there is a Puranic story in this regard.
- There is also another river with the same name near Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh (about 50 kms from Indore). It also has a Triveni Sangama consisting of Narmada, Kaveri and another tributary - just opposite to Omkareshwar Temple.
- In Thula, the Sun is in Thula rasi (its debilitation point) and his Son (Saturn) is in exaltation. Sun is also considered the Atmakaraka (not to confuse with Jamini Astrology's definition of Atmakaraka). So, holy river bathing during this month is said to bring forth Atma bala which is otherwise muted (I am not an astrologer but read somewhere!).

May we endeavor to attain the blessings of Kaveri Mata.
